New ER nurse

Published

Hi everyone! I'm new to the ER and am looking for any advice you can give on how to improve my workflow and become more efficient. I've been doing my best to keep up, but there's so much to learn, and I really want to improve.

Specifically, I'm struggling a bit with charting, especially writing my initial notes and assessment notes. Any tips on how to structure them better or make the process faster without missing key details? Are there any specific templates that have helped you?

Also, I'd love to hear any general advice on what's most important to focus on as a new ER nurse. What are the best things to know that will help me stay organized and on top of things during my shifts?

Sorry that was a lot ! Thank you!

What EMR are you working with and what are your employer's documentation policies related to assessments?

People may have specific advice that take those factors into account. Short of knowing that information my basic advice is to document what is directly relevant to the situation in the most efficient manner possible and do not double chart—which would include writing any notes that cover things already documented or that are irrelevant or that could be more quickly done by clicking a box.
