New CNA work for a medical agency

Published

I have a question. So I recently got my CNA certificate and decided to work for a medical agency due to them having competitive wages. The job consist of me going to different nursing facilities that are below federally minimum for cna and nurse staffing. I felt like I have walked into this facility ill prepared. I was never oriented and trained I was just delegated to do assignments in a long term care unite that us 40 beds I was assigned 12 residents. I know my role as a cna however it is very hard to do care on a resident you aren’t familiar with. When I seem to ask other staff the vibe is just hostile since it’s very understaffed everyone is running around. I had two showed to do and I did one of them and wanted to do the other one later in the day so I don’t fall behind on my other residents. A residents wife came in screaming as to why her husband has not been changed all day and hasn’t had his shower I was on break. And the charge nurse came to me asking what’s going on I had told her that he was dry last I checked and that I would do his shower later in the day since no other cna was willing to trade residents with me and that I wouldn’t have time to shower two residents and change all my residents in time for breakfast. So after I got off my break the nurse had went to the room and told me to come in. I had realized that I had mad a mistake and accidentally went to the other roommate of his that I wasn’t assigned to and not him which was a honest mistake it was my second full day in the facility and my first morning shift there since I usually work overnights I still an not familiar on how these residents look like and I feel like I’ve been cheated because i truly cannot provide the proper care to residence if I don’t know whose who. Long story short the nurse decided to yell at me and say that she’s behind on her assignments and will not be done because of me. I just don’t know what to do because although this was my mistake it was truly an accident and had I known I would never leave a resident soaking wet for hours what advise would you give me to handle this situation since it has escalated.

Yea, welcome to life as a CNA. Running around mad, like a chicken with your head cut off. Resident's family needs this, coworker needs help, nurse asked you do to xyz already, and 5 call lights are going off oh, and your co workers are MIA, as usual. Btw, shift end, get ready for who did what, pointing finger, blame game. Idk what it is about CNA/nursing home work, but it is chaotic at times. I figure it is a great proceeding to future RN work.

Basically, everything you experienced is unfortunately normal. Experience, respect, etc is earned/gained. Just put your head down, learn your job as quickly as possible, and cover your butt. Dear God, use your gait belt for transfers and let your coworkers hostility roll off your back. Be nice to the newbies.
