new here & need help w/ Samuel Merritt ABSN app f

Published

I am applying to the ABSN program at Samuel Merritt this month and I am running into some trouble with the writing sample. Is there anyone that can give me some advice/help?... I have a very rough draft complete but I'm not confident with it. Should the writing sample be very structured and 'formal' (like a section for what motivates me and a section for my preparation) or should it be somewhat creative so I stand out in comparison to other applicants? Are they looking more at content or writing skills?.... Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I also applied to SMC for the ELMSN program. I think for the FNP track they have about 250 applications for about 25 slots, but I would guess they let in at least 50 if not closer to 75. But I think if you have good stats, you have a good chance to get in. I've also *heard* that the ABSN program in SF isn't too difficult to get into. And since they opened up four campuses, more people apply to the absn program, making the elmsn less competitive.

I'm glad to hear that, makes me relax, just a little. Did you apply for the FNP for this fall?

For those of you considering applying to Merritt College (the JC), don't do it! Disorganization is the absolute best description of that program. I am an LVN that graduated from their LVN program 9 years ago which was pretty good by the way. Their RN program is a different story. I was in the RN program as a generic student before they had a bridge program and it was awful. They have a high overturn of program directors and their instructors lack compassion and respect for their students especially the Peds instructor. One instructor was awesome (Maternal/Child) and that's it. Giving them the benefit of the doubt, a couple of years later, I return to the program as a LVN-RN bridge student...still no changes. Half of the LVN brige students quit and wish we would've stayed at Chabot's bridge program. My advice is to try Chabot College its more organized, thorough, have instructors that care and have patience with you, and have a very high NCLEX pass rate.

deann52, which SM location are you at? was that campus your first choice. i just finished my application and am a nervous wreck bc i didn't apply for any other school...probably not the best idea but all i want is to get into the ABSN program @ SM for summer.

how long did it take after the app deadline for you to find out that you were accepted? what was your NET and GPA if you don't mind sharing. how intensive is the program? are you working or just doing full-time school? sorry for all the questions.

I'm in a similar boat. Even though I have one other school (De Anza), the chance of getting in within 1-2 years through lottery is so slim that I can't really count on it. I'll have my second drawing on November 4 for De Anza. Wish me luck!

justwant2banurse: i am in the april cohort and we turned in apps the same time as you guys (last year); i think apps were due November 1st. We didn't find out until beginning February and some people found out up to a week before classes started (waitlisted). For San Mateo summer 2008 cohort I heard that there were only 38 or so students when our (SF) campus started; not sure if they added more students as it got closer to when San Mateo started.

The best advice I could give you is to put it out of your mind and try to concentrate on other things. I know how hard it is waiting, but enjoy the time before; It will fly by. Best of luck!
