I am new ambulatory care manager and I would love it if someone can provide an resources for this position. Are there magazines devoted to this job, or great books someone has read on the subject? Right now it's very overwhelming because I am coming from a in patient setting where I was a manager but out patient physicians office is a whole new world.

Nurse Zen,
I might be able to help you as I work in large physician practice as clinical manager. Physician practice is soooo much different than working as a hospital manager. The best book I've read is "Good to Great" by Jim Collins. Might not seem like it applies to heatlhcare but it's great for understanding the "on the bus or off the bus" concept. It's a hard core look at leadership in business and that's really what's needed in the physician practice. Good Luck as it can be difficult to manage if you don't have supportive leadership over you. The other is Clincial 5S for healthcare by Akio Takahara. If you can more toward the LEAN process, it will help your organization.
Thank you for the suggestions. Sorry it took so long to get back to you. I just put Good to Great on the reserve list at my library. I will have to look for the Clinical 5S book.
