First meeting with School... Any advice?

U.S.A. Nevada

Published

so i met with the health advisor at csn.

let's start with good news... i only have these 2 classes i have to take prior to getting into the program.

  1. biology 189: signed up for fall semester (couldn't get into the summer program)
  2. biology 223

also, i have taken all the general education requirements, com 101, soc 101, psc 101, except for biology 224 and biology 251. because of this, i will only be taking one class a semester. woo hoo. bad news, the two biology classes i have to take cannot be taken out of order/sequence and both have to be completed before you can sign up for the next or apply for the nursing school. so, it could be 2 years before i even get into the program. gees. who would have thought, with all the pre-requisites and general ed classes i've already taken, it'd be that long. wow.! best case, fall 2010. kind of stinks but oh well.

also, my gpa has to be 2.5 and i have 3.85 now

It took me years to do my pre reqs, but the time goes by quickly. Good luck these classes are not easy so 1 at a time may not be bad.

Thanks. I just hope I can get into all the classes each semester. Gees.

Just for kicks...check in with Nevada State College and see if you can take 251 or 223 without having 189 completed. Then you can transfer your grades in....just a thought

I wish you the best of luck. I hope things go well. I'm in a very similar situation than you. Couple of pieces of advice.

1) You might want to apply to more than one school. I don't want to scare you, but I learned the hard way. I just got a rejection letter from a community college in Oregon with a 3.9 prerequisite GPA (even though overall is 3.5) and a bachelor's degree from UNLV.

2) Be patient. I'm 30 and have been in school for years and years. I know it sucks to wait, but it will be worth it.

3) One at a time is the best idea because grades are extremely important.

4) A job at a hospital (no matter how menial the work) is a great way to learn the ropes. I work in patient transportation which requires NO technical skills, but I get tons of valuable experience with patients.

Good luck

I am not trying to be negative Joia, but you will have a hard time getting accepted without having biology 224 complete. I know you can apply without it, but when I got accepted everyone in my class had taken it already. A few were finishing up biology 251, but made up those points with perfect gpas and test scores.

My advice: complete as many classes as possible before applying, but who knows: you might still get in not having completed all the courses. The CSN RN program is set up in a point system, which means that individuals with the most points are the ones that will get accepted. Both Bio 224 and 251 account for 15 of the POSSIBLE 34 points at CSN (that is almost half). With the being said the more courses you complete the better your chances.

Thanks for you advice everyone. Do you think I should take a course at Nevada state college or somewhere? I am planning on getting as many classes as I can prior to trying!!! Seriously, thanks so much!!!! All advice is much appreciated!

Hey, just an idea.

If you go to NSC this summer you can pick up your 189 and 223. You could take 189 during the first 6 week semester and 223 the second 6 week semester. Then really push your credit transfer to CSN for your DARS report and then apply for the Spring 2009 RN program (September 1, 2009 deadline). Take a look at this link from NSC.

You will have to move quickly if you want to get into the summer classes.

I kinda did the same thing when I first moved here but I needed 189 and 251. It will be cutting it close for the application deadline I think it is doable. I really enjoyed the summer classes at NSC. Now I have been accepted in the Fall 2009 RN program.

Just my 2 cents.:twocents:

Wow, that is some good info. I am reading the link now but I am thinking it's too late for summer as I have to get accepted and than provide information from CSN and high school!!! But maybe I can try for Fall?! Hm. That'd be awesome to be able to take courses there if I don't get into the one's at the college now. I'd hate to miss out on a semester because the class fills up ! That's aggravating. I know I should be patient but I really want to get in and get things moving.

let’s start with good news… i only have these 2 classes i have to take prior to getting into the program.

congrats on getting your gen ed requirements done! i hate to burst your bubble but i don't think anyone gets in without completing biol 224 and biol 251 anymore. these are both worth 15 points alone. there are some people who think that they can apply for the program while taking one or both classes, but most or all of them soon find out csn has gotten tough on their deadlines (i know it stinks). so, you have to get both courses completed and with final grades before you can even apply. i haven't met anyone from my nursing class this semester who hasn't finished both classes prior to applying. those that do get in without completing one or the other were just lucky, but don't count on luck. csn has plenty of applicants to chose from. whoever you spoke to didn't really give you good advice. i wonder why they do that? misleading.

before i applied to the program last year, i did my research on my own. i talked to a pre-req advisor one time (pretty useless really) and the rest, i asked the nursing department in the k bldg. sometimes, there are a few people there who will talk to you and help you fill in the blanks. by the way, i also hung out by the snack bar for a short time and met some current nursing students at that time and got the dish from them. i decided to apply and got in the first time but i took all required and extra point(s) classes.

Who told you only one at a time? I hope you did not meet with the one at the cheyenne campus. You can take the Micro 251 with A & P 224. I did. Some of the teachers are super awesome.

You can also take it once you have been in 223 for one week. You will have to attend 224 so not to miss anything but you cannot officially sign in until a week is up. I do not believe there is any pre requisite for 251 except Bio 189. If you plan to study a lot there is Hope!
