Calling all ABSN Roseman Alumi and Current Students

U.S.A. Nevada

Hi there-

I'm thinking about moving and starting Roseman's 16 month program in July. I need heavily detailed information about schedules. I'm a single mom of three who I would be taking with me (clearly alone with no family help.) Before everyone tells me it is impossible I have done the 2 years of nursing prerequisites with VERY minimal help - with having to be in class. ZERO flexibility. I do know this would be a very large change for us all but I can't imagine taking on a longer program when I could be past the school stage. I really need to start working to provide for these babies.

My main questions are what does a normal week and month look like?

1. Does the online didication allow for flexibility? Aka a sick kid? If yes or no please explain. I need to figure out ALL possible worst case scenarios that would cause me to fail and set up plans on how to be successful in them now.

2. What I'm the most worried about is the clinicals and getting a night shift. That one I likely couldn't handle if the school wasn't willing to work with me. Did anyone have similar problems? Was there a solution to this? I actually want to be a night shift nurse but I can't until I move back home where their dad lives.

3. Do you ever get breaks? If so explain.

4. Any other important advice that could help me prepare for not just school but juggling this task of graduating as soon as possible.

5. I do have family members would want be able to accommodate - aka come out stay with my kids - for a few night shifts as long as I have enough notice. How many days before your schedule clinicals do you receive your schedule?

OOOHH! And has anyone ever heard that they didn't receive a job because they were in an ABSN program? I want to be a nicu nurse at UCSF benioff when I graduate (goal of mine) and I don't want them to decline me because I went through an accerlated program.

Thanks everyone! :)

Amanda,

I am set to graduate in June, 2017 from Roseman ABSN (Henderson). I love almost everything about the program because you can complete a majority of your school work from home minus labs, videos, test, and clinical rotations. But the BIGGEST issue has been with the scheduling, it was extremely frustrating at times due to last minute changes. They have gotten a little bit better with scheduling as our cohort as advanced but issues still arise.

1. If your kid is sick, teachers I have had will work with you. Such as allowing you to come in at a different time (individually) to do labs or make up a test. However, if you miss a clinical day you may have to write an 8-10 page paper due within 24 hours. I don't know what happens when you miss 2 days worth.

2. We haven't had night shifts, not saying that you won't. The school is at the mercy of the local hospital schedules, our clinicals are usually 7am-7pm 2-3 days a week, including weekends some rotations.

3. Breaks depend upon where you are in the program, if you are in clinacal during Thanksgiving or Christmas, you will likely get those days off and continue with the rotation. Again this depends on where your cohort is in the program. We do get spring break. A whooping 2 days off and 4 if you count the weekend!

4. Just stay focused, do your work on time because if you fall back a day it's hard to catch up.

5. Clinical schedules we usually get any where from 2-4 weeks in advance, but be aware things can change such as lab days and you will have to adjust on the fly.

Lab days were often 3 hours but a few can go up to 8 hours.

i don't know if people look down on ABSN programs, but the school has a pretty good reputation in the Vegas valley from the nurses and managers I talked too.

Don't listen to those who doubt you because of your situation, if you do you'll end up doing nothing

Thank you so much for starting this thread! I am in the SJ cohort starting in July of this year, too! Can't wait to meet you! I am (going to be) 25, Pre-Med degree, currently a Dialysis Technician, former CNA, from Oregon. Thank you, also, @0331RN! SOOOO helpful! I'm nervous because of the amount of money involved, but I am told it will be totally worth it.

Hi Amanda, have you started yet? I got accepted to ABSN Feb 2018 Cohort in Las Vegas and I'm on FB same boat as you are. I have the same concerns and wondering if you or anyone could enlighten me. I will be going to school, working part-time with 2 kids (6yo and a 3 yo). I do have family in town to help at times
