Nevada hearing for safe patient ratios

During Nurses Week before that hearing, with momentum building from coast to coast for safe staffing legislation, SEIU nurses will gather at the Sunrise Hospital & Medical Center in Las Vegas to speak out on behalf of the state's proposed staffing bill. If youre in the area, why not get a few nurse friends and go over to join the crowd. The more the merrier.... and the louder the message.

Nurses in Nevada recently set out to show the real cause of the growing nursing shortage by mailing a questionnaire to 1,500 RNs who left Las Vegas area hospitals during the past two years. The results of the survey were startling: Roughly 75 percent of the nurses cited poor working conditions as the reason for their departure, and fully 65 percent said they would consider returning if staffing levels were adequate.

The survey results, which were publicized in area newspapers and on TV news, confirm what nurses have been saying all along--that recruitment initiatives alone won't solve the crisis.

"It doesn't matter how many nurses you put through nursing school," says Jerri Strasser, RN, a member of SEIU Local 1107. "Once they get into the hospitals and find out the situation, they are out of there."

The nurses are now working to introduce safe staffing legislation in the state legislature.

I dont know which day the rally in Las Vegas is scheduled for. Call the SEIU there for details. Contact numbers are at the website for its nurse alliance local in Southern Nevada. Theyre the ones conducting the rally so they should be able to give you all the info you need. Have fun:

saw the excellent testimonies by the Nevada State Nurses Assoc (NNA) on your website. I especially liked the point-blank tone of the second one uncovering the hypocracy and stalling tactics the hospital assoc used everytime nurses tried to address the shortage at the bedside.

Good for the NNA for making it so clear as to why the problem exists in Nevada, who caused it, and how the hospitals there are preventing it from being fixed. Maybe now the state will take the control out of the hospitals hands & take action itself.
