Hi Everyone,

I am an acute dialysis RN here at my local hospital. I have my BSN and I'm now looking to become a nurse practitioner that specializes in nephrology. I've only worked with MD's so basically my question is if there are any nephrology NP's out there can you tell me a little about what your part is in the team? What's your typical day like? Are you working at a hospital, clinic, practice...all of the above? Also, my days as a dialysis RN are very unpredictable and I'm constantly on call for 24 hours due to the nature of the job. Basically, I'm burnt out so I'm wondering what are the typical work hours of a nephro NP? Last but not least, what is the best degree to get. FNP, Adult NP, Acute Adult NP? Not sure which one would provide the best basis of education.

Hi there - I'm a nephrology APRN (for almost 10 years now). I had no nephrology experience when I went into this. My RN exp was 2 years adult ICU, 1 year peds ICU and 10 years all ages level 1 trauma center ER.

I do dialysis rounding at four outpt chronic HDU and totally manage all their care from their labs to hypertension, some diabetes, some thyroid management, some cardiac care, and lots of consulting with other specialists regarding dosing of meds (them consulting with me).

I also do CKD education for our pre-dialysis pts and I'm the lead APRN for our very large nephrology practice.

Hello all,

I am an NP working in Nephrology practice and was wondering if there is any certification course for Nephrology NP and if anyone has taken it, please let me know the resources that helps to study for the exam?

ANNA has an NP certification. I did not take the exam.
