nephritis in the womb

I have a friend who just had an ultra sound. She is five months preg and they told her that her baby has slight nephritis. They acted like it was nothing to be concerned about. I am in nursing school and she asked me about this, but I am just am not knowlegable. Does anyone have any info? Thanks!

I think you most likely mean hydronephrosis, NOT nephritis. Hydronephrosis is not uncommon at all. They will follow her with ultrasounds and if the kidney remains enlarged after birth, they will probably put the baby on prophylactic antibiotics and then just watch the progression as the condition resolves itself (which is usually the case).

Thanks! I asked her about the name and she that you are correct and I told her it was not uncommon, so I think she feels better. The way the doc delivered the news was not the best way, for a first time mommy. She used a lot of big words and didn't really explain in layman's terms. She sat my friend down and said 'there's a problem' and that was kinda of it. She asked "what's worst case senario?" and doc told her that that baby's blockage could possibly prevent him from making amnioctic fluid, so, she freaked out! My friend is going back in two weeks for a check up, so, maybe she'll be a little more forceful in getting answers.

You know, there is NO reason for a doc to present anything to anyone like that. I always tell my childbirth couples that if the doc will not take the time to explain things or blows them off, it is time to find a new doc. I sort of feel that way about this.

Thanks for your replys! I feel the same way........I will probably post in another couple of weeks if anything fishy comes up during her next check up. Chances are, if the doc acts the same, she'll ask me- like I know......
