Holidays off ... what's that? Nurses getting holidays off is not the norm. We work in all types of inclement weather, during disasters, and holidays. Just because the Post Office and Banks are closed doesn't mean we can take off. How do you ask for a holiday off? Is it like pulling teeth and just as painful?
We have assigned holidays we work, 1 major holiday in summer and 1 in winter (Memorial Day, July 4, Labor Day; Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's).
We aren't even allowed to request time off between Nov. 1 and Jan 15. This doesn't stop people from taking time off. Quite a few people schedule semi-elective or elective surgeries so they are off all of December. Currently, I've been off since Dec. 1 and will be until at least Jan. 5 due to a work injury. It is not all that fun.

My hospital also rotates the holidays. But unfortunately depending on census I'm the only CNA that works because the other girls request to be on call. But I work nights, and it's holiday pay so not too big of a deal.I see my family for a bit at least.
