Negotiating contracts

Published

I had a phone interview and accepted a position with the site director. Is it too late to negotiate the financial end now or when does one do the negotiation?

How does one handle being offered the position on the phone when the details of the contract have yet to be finalized. Should I work this out with the agency prior to any interview or wait until there is an offer? If waiting should I accept the position when offered and hope all goes well...?

Most directors when making an offer seem to want an answer during the interview...

Any tips would be appreciated.

Thanks

It is always best to have the job offer financial numbers BEFORE you interview. One time for me the financial numbers were not available yet so I did interview without them. Once the manager knew she wanted me, I told the agency "oh, I can't do the job for that!". Guess who got a much higher offer!!

You have not accepted a job offer with your employer, the agency, yet. That is dependent on the contract, and being deemed suitable by the facility. The hospital is not your employer. Ideally, you make that clear on the interview, as the interviewer has no idea if you have already been through your personal and private job details with the agency: "I'm very interested in this assignment but I have to talk to my agency first".

Negotiate away! You are in a stronger position now, and you certainly don't have to tell the agency that you accepted the assignment, just that you told the interviewer that you were interested pending details. If the agency blusters and threatens, and says you agreed already, well now you know the stuff they are made of and can get out of there.
