negative thoughts/ stress relief

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hi everyone. So lately I have been having negative thoughts about nursing school. I am so stressed about applying for the program and starting the program. Negative thoughts constantly scramble around in my mind and it worries me. How can I overcome my thoughts? How can I combat the stress?

Thank you

You are in company of many people who are on the journey towards being a nurse who face self-doubt on a regular basis. It is very common to read in allnurses.com and elsewhere about people like you and I who went through this in prerequisites, finished, and are still nervous, in the program, or even graduated.

In my experience, the main way of getting beyond this (and it is normal for it to come back) is to continually reinforce to ourselves the positives:

* We have a dream

* Our dream is achievable and realistic

* Look at how far we've come

* If we get pushed back, we will persevere; we will be patient

* If we are crushed, we will not abandon our dream

* Others have done it, so can we

* I will make it; I can do it.

Natalie, if that fails or when it fails, find the most uplifting music you can find, and listen to it as often as you can do so to the point where you have given songs just going on constantly in your head. Be sure to exercise, take breaks, go on long walks, get plenty of sleep, and eat right. Do avoid alcohol and other substances that in the end depress vs. lift up. If able, surround yourself with others who will encourage you and uplift you; be sure to return the gift by encouraging and uplifting others.

We can do it, Natalie.

Thank you. I'm also down because I got a 68% on my stats test (I don't have a good professor at all) but I do all he home work and class work. It just brought me down emotionally. :/

HI Natalie:

While I didn't take stats yet (it's on my list for the BSN portion of my journey), check out iTunes University for MATH 202 from Harrisburg Area Community College (they have some good itunes). http://www.sjsu.edu/faculty/matthew.holian/pdf/col10522-1.40.pdf may or may not be helpful (I don't know as I'm not taking stats yet). https://www.khanacademy.org/math/probability might also be helpful. Do also consider meeting with your professor to go over what you went wrong, and ask for how to do better. If your college has a learning/tutoring center, also consider that as well.

Thank you.
