Sooooooo I began working as a nurse on a temporary license on January 13, took the Nclex on February 24, became licensed on March 1st and experienced my first needle stick with someone that may be hep c + today March 3, I'm 23 so of course I freaked out and swore my life was over. All I can do now is wait on my results from my jobs recommended clinic. 😡 Has anyone experienced anything similar?

During my first months on the job, I was pregnant, stuck myself with a needle administering pain rx to a junkie that had just had a limb amputation. I was being the good little nurse ... recapping ( yes we did that) the needle without turning on the light to disturb the patient.
Kid and I turned out fine.
What was the failure in technique, and what does "may have Hep C" mean?
I administered insulin with dominant hand and as i began to put the needle in the sharps container with my non dominate hand the pt began to bleed so I bended down to wipe the blood and there was the poke in my wrist. Pt states of having hep c+ years ago but it's not located in the chart, neither was his doctor aware of dx so they're taking precautionary actions on both my end and the pts.

So sorry to hear this how frightening! May god be with you. How did your labs turn out? I also had an exposure couple years ago as a CMA thank god nothing serious just blood sprayed and almost got into my eyes or might have. Point is patient wasn't HIV positive on the bright side, and I turned out fine. I remember having to go back 6months later to know the real deal on the results cause catching HIV I Gus's don't show up right away. I also go tested on the 8th week I believe and 3mos than 6mos.
Hi my labs turned out negative for everything, I actually go back for my 12 week labs on friday, and then I will have to go back in 6 months. I'm glad your labs came back negative as well. I will keep you in my prayers!
Thank you. This happened years ago so it's far past me. But still have that experience in the back of my head. Still not sure if to go to nursing school cause of it and other reasons. Good luck in sure everything will be ok God bless
