NeedHelp - an interview for an accelerated BSN

Published

Hello, everyone. Though I new to this site, I have realized that there are so many helpful forums in this site.

I am applying for an accelerated BSN at OU in MI, and expecting an interview. But I am so nervous about that. Can anyone give me any suggestions on that? What shoul I prepare for that? My GPA is 4.0, and I have medical research experience at a hospital.

Thanks

I haven't had an interview yet for nursing school, but I am preparing to have several soon. Hopefully others who have already been through some interviews can offer you some advice as well.

Personally, I am just preparing by really making sure that I can articulate why I want to change careers and go into nursing, and why I have chosen the schools that I have. I also can speak to my strengths and weaknesses, can talk about my study/learning skills, and have an idea of where I want to go once I graduate. I can also answer their questions about my previous career and life experiences.

Your GPA is high and you have experience in a medical environment. Just be prepared to answer some basic questions and I'm sure you will do fine. You sound like a great candidate.

If you do a search via the search box at the top of each page, you'll find a bunch of threads about interviewing. For my ABSN interview, the interviewer asked me a bunch of questions designed to figure out if I had a clue what nurses actually do. (She said she gets a lot of Grey's Anatomy watchers who are clueless!) So think about what a typical nursing shift might be like. She also asked me questions designed to figure out if I had the organizational skills to do an accelerated, intense program. Your GPA speaks to your study skills in general, but how will you deal with the pace required? Do you have a good support system? How will you handle life's stresses and still complete the program on time? Stuff like that. Also, don't feel like you have to know right now what kind of nursing you want to do. It's OK to say something like, "Everyone tells me to do my clinicals before I decide, because there might be some area of medicine I absolutely love that I am simply unaware of right now." Good luck!
