It should be pointed out that Los Angeles and the greater Los Angeles area is really large. If someone suggests housing, it could be several hours away from your assignment hospital. I would suggest starting with finding an assignment (part of which can be looking at local housing), and then getting serious about apartment choices. AM recruiter will have access to traveler comments on prior housing at your location and can give you recommendations. You can also look up apartment complex online and find many reviews. You will have to take them with a grain of salt as most will be negative - human nature.
After that, you can decide whether or not to find housing independently as do perhaps most experienced travelers. Reasons include significant saved money from the housing stipend, as well as choices you control completely. But I would recommend just taking agency housing for your first assignment. You want to reduce stress, and finding your own housing is stressful. I would also recommend that you need a successful first assignment and a good recruiter to help you achieve that. So don't worry about location as much as a traveler friendly unit. After that, you can determine your actual skills and seek a wider range of locations and difficulty level.
