Hi all. I want to hear the thoughts of those in management.
I have been at my current hospital for about two and a half years and my current position for just under a year. I moved recently for my spouse's work, which created an 85 minute commute! I am struggling with the commute even though I LOVE my job as a float pool nurse. I stay in the town where I work now between shifts but this is very hard for my family.
I want to find work closer to home but also stay in my current specialty (less than a year). I'm torn between looking for work without telling my managers or actually explaining what is happening for me and asking for their help with transferring (networking?).
Would you be receptive to your employee moving jobs and perhaps even be willing to connect them elsewhere? Is it better for you not to know an employee is considering leaving?
I also feel bad for possibly leaving after a year. They out a lot of time and money into training me. Any thoughts on this as a hiring manager? Would it be helpful for you to know that I love my job and am only changing due to distance?

Don't expect them to help you find a new job. They've already invested enough in you: don't ask them to invest more to help you leave. Just find a job on your own and give them the proper notice when the time comes.
If you need to list them as possible references for getting a new job ... ask if the new can wait until late in the process before contacting them. You don't want to let them know you are leaving until it is pretty certain that you will be taking a new job.

I think this really depends on your relationship with your boss. I doubt I would be willing to help in a job search for someone who has been with me for a year or two. Now if you had been with the company for 10 years and were a stellar employee I would be more than happy to be supportive even though I would hate to see you leave. I agree with the above poster. Be sure to give adequate notice but I wouldn't approach your boss about it.
