Need a new stethoscope (hard of hearing)

Published

Hello All,

I'm a nursing student due to graduate (hopefully) in May and have found that my hard hearing and my $30 knock-off stethoscope just isn't cutting it. It's fine in quiet settings but the slightest noise makes it near impossible to hear anything. I've seen another post around here but it seemed rather old and has been closed so I'm curious if there's anything new and improved since then. I've looked at Ultrascope and Maxiscope classics but can't really tell a difference from the description. Anybody have experience with those? Also, I've heard a lot of good things about Littmann Stethoscopes but some models can get a little bit pricey. What model should I look for? My interest is in ER/Trauma and I basically just want a stethoscope that I can hear what I need to hear, when I need to hear it. If it makes a difference, I have mild hearing loss in one ear in the upper range with some tinnitus so background noises give me real trouble sometimes. Thanks for any opinions.

I have an ultrascope and I love it! I've used mine in clinic setting, LTC, occupational health, even during hazmat drills. I've never had a problem hearing. (Have good hearing as far as I know) They are a bit pricey but I don't regret mine at all. Its nice to have one that sucks out from all the others (as it seems they grow legs) and having fun/view design helps give kids something to look at and hopefully allow you to do what you need.

I have a co worker that is hard of hearing and she invested in a digital stethoscope.

I'm a little hard of hearing too. I use a cardiology scope. My current one is a Littman cardiology III.

I have tinnitus and have the same problem. I have read alot of positives about the MDF Er Premier. I know it is expensive but if it gets me through

Hi everyone

I need ur feedback or suggestions, I'm a hard of hearing student, my goal is to become an RN nurse.

I'm finishing my prerequisites in order to apply into the nursing clinical program. Do u know any good school who takes or accept hard of hearing students?

I have to write a personal essay stating why I decided to become a nurse , should I mention about my hearing impairment? I'm afraid that it might be a detrimental since colleges are very strict when it comes to select students to get accepted into nursing programs.

Any advise?

Sebastian

Thanks a lot

I know I have some hearing loss even though I haven't been tested for it. I have a Maxiscope, and yes you will hear sounds you have never heard before with more inferior scopes. Just as good if not better is the Allheart cardiology scope, it has heavier durable tubing, and a bell and diaphragm, and costs $29, or less on sale. Maxiscope and Ultrascopes are more expensive, and do require a learning curve as they have a pressure sensitive diaphragm, so you use varying pressure for cardiac, lung, abdomen, and B/P assessment, but they are excellent scopes. I never have owned a Littman, so I can't speak for those. I guess it really depends on how much hearing loss you have.
