Can any of you that have used voice recorders for class give me some advice as to which ones are the best and which ones to stay away from?

I've been looking at them on the internet, and I just can't really tell which ones would be the best.....digital or cassette? Do the voice activated ones REALLY start to record when someone speaks, or have you had any trouble with them? What about the ones that use cassettes? Is it any better to have the cassette kind?

Also, when a digital recorder says it has a max of 3 hrs recording time, then what do you do when you have recorded your three hours? Do you move your recording to a folder and then you an start all over with more recordings or what?

Can you tell I'm confused??? Also, for those of you that have used recorders.....do you feel that it has helped you a lot as far as retention and getting the most out of your lectures?

Thanks so much for any and all advice!

Hello! I just purchased a digital recorder from Wal-Mart for about 50.00. I thought it would be better because it has different files. My plan is to tape the lecture in one file and then read my notes into another file. This way I can make sure my notes are accurate and then re-read them so I can listen in all of my free time lol. This will be my first semester trying this though, so I don't know how it will work.

Hi,

My husband purchased my digital recorder this past summer. He bought it from Best Buy. (note to self, never send husband to electronics store alone..) Anyway, needless to say, he purchased a very nice digital recorder. (I only asked for a cheap little recorder) I think it cost about $80. It has 5 files and several hours of recording time. The brand is Olympus. After I recorded, he downloaded them for me and then put them on cd. I could then listen to them in the car on my way to class. I am very happy with the recorder and am glad that he did not listen to me and purchase the inexpensive one.

After two weeks of owning the new recorder, I realized my sony clie would have done this without me having to purchase the seperate recorder. Oh, well, now I have two. :)

Jenny,

Will all sony clie's do this? I was just looking at best buy's website to see what kind of prices they have and ran across it and remembered reading your post. I need both a pda AND a digital voice recorder and it sure would be cool do get it all in one package, but the info on best buy's site doesn't say anything about the clie being able to record.....

thanx!

Hi,

Sorry it has taken me so long to reply. I have been out of town. Anyway, No, not all of the clie's do voice record. If you go to the Sony website and choose pda's you should be able look at all of the various clie's that they have. I absolutely love mine!! The voice quality is there for the recording. It is very easy to use and you can find lots of programs for the clie. Mine is running around $400 right now. I would suggest choosing your favorite and then going to a search bot for the best price. You may also find some cool rebates too! Best wishes to you.

Jenny
