Nurses Safety

Published

Hello everyone! I am new registrant and new to the profession.....so bare with me! As you may have gathered I live and practice in Canada and work in a private pratice setting. My first question is related to consious sedation and the use of Propofol there in. I have read the Propofol thread previously posted (thank you for the valuable information and insites) but am having difficulty locating information on this specific topic within my province (Ontario), even though I have been in contact with a practice consultant with the CNO. I plan to speak to the nurse manager at my clinic with respect to this issue and have to tread carefully, but I must protect the safety of my patents and the integrity of my licence at all cost. Any further information/guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all for contributing to this wonderful site!

Hello,

I currently perform conscious sedation for a cath lab and Radiology and sometimes ER. We never use propofol for conscious sedation - the reason being it knocks people out, hence not conscious sedation. Usually we just try and relax people -- I have had them fall asleep but usually I can wake them up quickly and easily. We use versed, fentanyl, valium for sedation purposes. I have pushed propofol when we had to intubate but never for conscious sedation purposes.

Hi All!

Thanks for your replies.....I am planning to approach my clinic manager with respect to this issue very soon but I haven't been with the practice for very long and am worried that my job security may be threatened! Can anyone suggest some ways of approaching this issue that would avoid negative connotation?

Thanks Again!
