Nursing Students General Students

Ok..I am applying for a Student nurse position at one of the hospitals near me. Along with the letters of recommendation, transcript etc. I need to bring a letter stating why I want to work at this particular hospital and what I expect to get out of it.

I am a good student but when it comes to writing..especially writing my feelings on paper I get brain freeze. I basically want to say that I want to get more experience than just the clinical experience. I truly feel that we don't get enough hands on experience 2 days a week. When I end my time as a Student Nurse my hope is to feel a little more confidant and have some more actual hands on experience when I graduate than a nurse who never actually worked in the field....

Am I making sense??? See what I mean??? Any suggestions for what I could write???

Any help will be GREATLY appreciated:)

They are looking for why you want to work for them, not just why you want to work, period. While "you're the only place hiring" might be true, that's not what they want to hear.

How familiar are you with this facility? Have you done clinicals there? If so, what favorably impressed you about the facility?

If you haven't worked there, have you been there as a patient or have you heard good things about it?

If all else fails, look and see if they have a website (even tiny facilities have those now). Look over that and see what looks good to you.

What you want to be able to say is something like: "my grandma was a patient there and I was really impressed with the professionalism and level of caring shown by the nurses..." or "I've done clinicals there and the staff was so friendly and helpful blah blah blah..."

Does that help?

Even when you finish school and are looking for a nursing job, you'll hear the same sort of question. Probably throughout your career, in fact. Even if it isn't asked on an application, you can expect to be asked this in an interview.

It really does need to be something you can say honestly, too. The trick is to think of what are the possible good points about anyplace. Since most facilities have some good points, this shouldn't be too difficult.

Besides that, lots of factors can be positives or negatives, depending on your point of view. For example, a big facility might seem confusing or impersonal. On the other hand, in a larger facility you are likely to get a good variety of patients and more opportunity to learn and do new things.

Find out what you can, make a pro and con list, decide on what you can say sincerely, and figure out how to best word it.
