Need Help From Supervisors, Charge Nurses

I was just wondering if you have problem employees and what you do about them?

What are the biggest problems you have to handle and how do you do it?

Do your employees like you? Do they try to befriend you? Do you try to keep your distance from them or encourage friendship?

How do you reward good employees?

Do you encourage them to be creative and resourceful or do you require that they stifle themselves and always agree with you, never be innovative or make suggestions? Do you try to correct problems they bring to you or tell them to deal with it, make the best of it, that's how it's always been?

I find one of my pet peeves to be that one of our supervisors doesn't discipline her staff who are consistently tardy and then the other supervisors have to do it. They get mad at the others and love her!

I have 2 employees (CNAs) that barely do their jobs. When I let them know someone needs incont. care and ask them to please take care of it for me, all i get are exscuses why they cant do it. Usually its not my res. or im to busy right now. I recently had this problem the CNA told me im to busy, well he was busy reading the news paper, so i insisted he put the paper down and take care of the res, he just looked at me like i was stupid and kept reading, so iwrote him up and took care of the res myself. Well 2 days later we have a manditory meeting, guess what the meeting is about, you guessed it, about me and the other night nurse mistreating the aids.Management calling us arigant a**holes and telling us were refusing to do aid work.All of this in front of the complete nursing staff, very unproffessional in my opinion. So now we are in trouble for mistreating aids when in reality its these 2 aids not doing their jobs thats the problem. When their on my unit if things get busy i take one of their halls and do total care for that complete hall as does the other nurse. So my advise be very careful what is said and done.

They did nothing nor said nothing to him

One of the worst things that's happened when I've been in charge is other nurses trying to put off on me things they can very much do for themselves. For example, one time another nurse had the gall to ask me to do her admission so she could do her charting. She was floated to our floor and I don't know how things are on that floor, but I told her on ours that each RN who gets an admission is to do their own but if I didn't have a full assignment of patients myself, I wouldn't mind helping her.

BmtTXLVN, that would make me want to write them up on every single thing they were doing that wasn't work related AND everytime they gave me an excuse why they couldn't do it if they weren't already doing their job. I once told a nurse manager and our DON that if the techs didn't have to do what they were hired to do, I'd rather they get rid of all the techs, hire an extra nurse per shift so we wouldn't have as many patients each, and let us just be responsible for total care. I wouldn't want to work somewhere that treats you like they do.

You know, if they really called you arrogant a's, I think you need to get to their bosses right away. Are those really the words they used?

Part of the trouble is that you are in the habit of doing the aides' work when they can't or don't or won't do it. STOP it. Right NOW. NEVER do another lick of their work. I'm serious. If your residents remain poopy or wet then so be it. I know it hurts you to do that but it will only have to happen once or twice before a resident or family member complains to Management. Be prepared to explain that you were tied up with meds, dressings, orders, charting, admissions, MDS's, etc., etc. - things only a licensed nurse can do. Make sure you explain that you told Fred the Aide 3 times (and those exact times) that Mr. Smith needed help and Mrs. Jones needed changing. Make sure you know that Fred was at the desk looking at Media on the computer and reading the paper and on the phone to his buddies talking about going out for a beer after work.

Why should he do his job when he has you to do it for him, while he collects the pay? He apparently has little self-respect, little sense of honor and integrity. Make him develop these qualities by not doing his work for him.

If you get in trouble for the residents being uncared for, send a letter with all the details to the owners of your facility and to CMS and your state's Governor's office. Make sure that at the bottom of the letter, you notate that a copy is going to Senator Whoever, Governor So and So.

In other words, like this:

cc: Governor White, Senator Brown, CMS, file, your lawyer if you have one

That way, Admin and owners know you mean business and might even think twice before they fire you for some trumped-up reason.

I guarantee you someone will take action. You're in a ridiculous situation but it is partly of your own making because you do the aides' work for them when they are busy goofing off.

BTW, you're probably better off not saying a single word more to your bosses, as they have already made it quite clear that they intend to do nothing to the offending aides.

Again, never do a single lick more of the aides' work for them. Do your own and the heck with everything else.

P.S. You should probably be prepared to job hunt.

Ditto Trudy. If you do their work then they will sit an dplay all day every day. I would write them up too especially as you need to protect yourself. They might feel like they won with the management, but they need to know that you won't tolerate their lack of work during your shift as it puts you at a liablity and hurts the patients. Did anyone ever explain to the management exactly what was going on with them?! It's also a shame they called a meeting without even asking. Time to exit stage left. lol

Wow this hits home for me. We have several of these "I'm too busy reading the paper, chatting with my friends to do my work" employees. It did absolutely no good what-so-ever to talk with management. Every piece of paper ended up in the circular file. No matter what you do, the non-worker always comes out on top and the nurse is the problem. When the nurses finally went to management to find out exactly what the job duties of the aids were...she refused to give us a copy so that we would know what was expected of them.:angryfire , we even went to human resources to get a job description and they told us NO! Management does NOT like complainers, the non-workers don't complain so they are right. Whats the solution. move on or live with it. At least that is what happened to my place.

trudy you are right it is partly my fault, my heart just cant take seeing my residents that way. i did call corporate :devil: they are sending an investigation team down to check out my complaint .its breaking my heart but i did stop doing the aides work:bowingpur
