Need help finding apartment in Birmingham

Hello everyone,

I will be attending UAB in the Fall ( Yeah!!) and I need help finding an apartment that is student friendly. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Also, if anyone in the UAB program lives on campus, how is it? Do you think it is better to live on or off campus. BTW, I will be in Birmingham while my family is in GA and I will have to finance two households. Thanks in advance.

I used to go to UAB. I loved the campus. There are five hospitals in the area and all but one(St. Vincents) you can walk to with no problems. Parking was a problem sometimes but they have been trying to fix that with new parking garages. Here's a site I used to search for apartments close to the campus. http://www.birmingham-apartment.com/southside.html and another site with all Engel owned property http://www.engelapts.com/apartments.asp?area=Southside/UAB University Place is nice but I wouldnt pay that rent plus another household. Good luck apt hunting.

Hello, I am currently a junior at UAB. I live in University Place. It is one block from the LRC (where most of your anesthesia classes will be). The apartment is average (I think it actually used to be a hotel); however I think it is worth it to be in walking distance to classes and the Library. If you have any other questions I would love to help.

Congratulations!

Thanks for the info. Does the rent include utilities at University Place and what about parking and UAB's internet network. Is that offered or do I have to get internet service through Bellsouth. Is is hard to get an apartment there? Thanks again in advance. I look forward to meeting you!

The rent is $715 for a one bed room. I have a roommate so I only pay $367. The apartment is big enough for 2 people. The first semester we lived in a studio; I belive it was $600. It was a little small for 2 people. The rent includes all utilities; however, internet service is not provided. I can pick up the wireless signal from campus sometimes; but it is not dependable. I just use the computers at the library and LRC and have done fine (I am only at my apartment at night). The parking is $30 extra per month; however, we have never been charged this fee. If you live off campus you have to pay to have a parking pass which I believe is much more than the apartement parking fee. From what I have heard it is very hard to find a spot, and it is a long walk. Which regional component are you in?

Try looking here http://bham.craigslist.org/

There are a couple sections to look under- apts/housing- which are people with places to rent. The other is rooms/shared these are people looking for or have places to share.

I am in the Birmingham component. Looking forward to starting!. University Place sounds like something I'm looking for. I will probably get the studio, if there is one available, since it's just me. It will definitely be on my list. Thanks for the information. If you know of other apartments that your classmates are renting, let me know. Thanks again!
