the curriculum in nursing school is set in stone. once you are admitted into a nursing program you usually must follow the sequence of nursing classes in the order the school tells you. most schools require that you have to take certain pre-requisite classes first before you can apply to the nursing program of classes. maternity and pediatrics are specialties within the working world of nurses who are already licensed. in nursing school you are exposed to all kinds of nursing specialties including maternity and pediatrics as well as others.
probably the best way to start is get a list of the nursing schools around you and get information from them about the kinds of nursing programs they have, special hours for classes and admission requirements. night nursing classes will probably be hard to find, but not impossible. be aware that in addition to the admission requiremnets of the nursing program itself, the college where the nursing school is may have admission and graduation requirements as well that you would need to fulfill. most colleges today have websites that publish all this information online so it is readily available to the public. your state board of nursing will have a complete listing of all the lpn and rn nursing schools in your state. you can get a link to it from allnurses by clicking on the resources tab above.
When you check out the schools in your area, ask them about their NCLEX pass rates for a least the past 4 yrs. The NCLEX is the state test you take after graduation and you want to go to a school that has as high a pass rates for their graduate nurses as possible to be sure they are teaching what you need to know. A high pass rate says a lot about a program; it's teachers and it's curriculum. I lucked out, my CC has the highest NCLEX and the lowest tuition of all the Nursing programs in the area, I think (if it's not the highest it is still very good)
