Need some encouragement

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I've been trying to complete the nursing requirements for some time now. I am 22 years old and am in my 5th year of community college. After completing anatomy with a C grade and withdrawing from physiology on my first attempt, I gave up nursing and started pursuing a legal assisting degree. I thought I had already failed at trying to become a nurse.

This semester, I started with the nursing prerequisites again, and I currently have a D in physiology. I feel like a failure. My school offers remediation, but does anyone know if that means that the lower grades will disappear? I plan on meeting with a counselor next week, but I want to know asap if I still have a chance at succeeding.

Hey there!

Before I say anything else, what kind of background in biology and chemistry do you have?

Good question by nguyency. What kind of grades have you received in other classes? If you're ordinarily a good A/B student, then you have to start wondering if there's something about the sciences that you have a disconnect with. I'm of the opinion that anyone who is ordinarily a good student can also master the sciences and math. You just need to identify why these courses are so hard for you. As nguyency suggested, you might not have a solid enough background to handle the more advanced work. Although there is some application process involved in anatomy and physiology, for the most part it's absorbing and memorizing the information. Maybe there are some methods for learning the material that will make sense to you. Are you an auditory, kinestheic or visual person? I'm all three and the best way for me to memorize is to use flash cards, walk around spouting the information and repeatedly looking at the cards. Then I'm able to draw on all three to pull back the information during test time. I'm looking forward to hearing what your counselor says.

Also, if your heart is in healthcare, you'll be disappointed with the legal arena. While they are both "helping" fields, as a paralegal you will never get the satisfaction of having done good that you will with healthcare. Perhaps as an attorney you would but paralegals are very much behind the scenes for the most part.
