Need advices before changing career to nurse

Published

Hi all,

I am a married man, 30 yrs old and an electrical engineer.

I am thinking about changing my career to nurse, but I read a lot post about a male nurse, first year in nurse. I must says: it's so DISCOURAGE.

What else can a MSN can do?

I need all information from all of you before to make my call.

Thank you and wish the best to all.:typing

I'm going to be straight forward, from 18 years of nursing experience, and as an Area Director that has a workforce of 600+ employees.

A MSN means, in your case, that you had money to pay for a degree but no experience to back it up. I would hire you as a Med/Surg RN that has a lot to prove. And if you mouthed-off about your engineering degree, I would tell you to go back to engineering. To put it simply, nursing comes from the heart, the brain, and the soul.

Each nurse needs to learn from experiences with not only the patients but the family as well. We care for each other. We do not get an advanced degree and skip over the "empathy" part. It's actually really sick that you think that's acceptable.

I'm a RN and a MBA so I understand the financial standpoint to caring for those less fortunate. Perhaps you would be better off participating in designing hospitals.

To VEgas RN,

I appreciate you point out that MSN just also need experience, but I really dont like the way you say sound like you discriminate the people with higher degree. Do you know that people like me also improve ourselve to get what we had? and beside since I already have bachelor, I can only go to MSN instead of BSN, not mention to ADN because the waiting list is too long.

Hmm. Your comment that you can not pursue a BSN does not seem entirely accurate. I do not think you are necessarily forced to pursue a Masters in Nursing (MSN) just because you already have a bachelors, presumably geared towards engineering. I have known other nurses who went to Nursing school, had a previous bachelors of science, and got their Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN)- they just had to take the nursing specific classes, then came out if it with a 2nd bachelors degree. I also know several nurses who went to ADN schools with a previously obtained bachelors, just not in nursing.

Do you know any nurses? You may want to shadow a nurse for part of a shift to see what is involved. Just because you are an engineer now does not preclude you from being a great nurse. I currently work with 2 male nurses who were both engineers before they went to nursing school. Both work in ICU and are very caring, great nurses. It does sound like you aren't sure what you might be looking at getting yourself into. Shadowing an RN, taking a CNA class, etc. may give you a better idea and help you decide before you make the larger committment of nursing school.

Good luck!!
