Need Advice from Unionized Nurses

Published

Hi Everyone

I work in a large, unionized hospital. My position is unusual, I don't provide direct patient care (but I'm not management either, unless I could be considered the manager of my department of one ~ me!).

There are two other nurses who hold similar jobs. One of those other nurses just left her job and moved into a management position. They've re-classified her previous position as non-union and I've been given a heads up by the other nurse that they are looking to change our jobs to non-union as well. :uhoh21:

My question ~ can they reclassify my role while I'm still in it or do they have to wait until I leave?

I've read through my union contract and there is no mention of a situation like this. Union contract expires this Sept.

I've considered discussing this with my union rep., but I hesitate to 'stir the pot'.

I've also read through my job description and it's clearly a nursing position. :nurse:However, I'm not sure that a nurse that doesn't provide direct patient care can be excluded from the union...

Does anyone have any experience with something like this?

Any words of wisdom?

Thanks

Ask your union rep on the "QT" and ask them not to pursue anything untill you specifically ask them to. They should be able to give you an answer.

Specializes in Emergency.

I agree i would speak with your union rep. You added you have looked at your contract, still ask it is easy to miss something-our contract is 400 pages.

You state you contract is up in Sept so it is surly being negotiated at this time, ours exps June 30 and they started in October. You situation is one that may just have gotten missed in the past contracts.

There is also some federal rules and regualations- the rep probably would know specificlly that state just because your an RN and the only one in your "department" doesnt nessessarly make you management.
