In order to start LPN school in Fall of 2006 I need to finish up several pre-req's. Five of them would have to be in the Winter 05-06 quarter. They would be Math 101, English 101, A & P 101, Intro to Healthcare and Nutrition and diet Therapy. The reason I would have to take all of them at that time is because the last 2 classes(Drug Calculation & Nursing Fundamentals) are only offered in Spring and Fall and you have to complete those two last. I would have summer quarter off to work a lot and get caught up financially so I could get a part time job during nursing school. My question is feasibly would I be okay with this course load? I am a 25 year old single mom who has plenty of help with my daughter in order for me to go to school at night and the rest of the classes online. Luckily I am still on good terms with my former inlaws who are more than willing to watch her anytime I need. I do work fulltime 9-5, but I work administratively for my church and can do school work while here. I keep telling myself its only for 11 weeks. I've never been more determined to put myself through school after dealing with the past year of a cheating spouse and consequently the divorce. I just hate the thought of not going for it now, because if I wait and spread those classes out I wouldn't even start nursing school until Spring 2007 and that includes 2 quarters off becuause they don't offer courses then. I'm scared I'll drag my feet with only taking a class here and there that I will get discouraged and quit. I look at my mom who has been an RN for 20 years, put herself through LPN and RN school with 2 small children, no husband of child support and worked weekends at the pancake house for $2.15 an hour. Thats my determination. But that was also 20 years ago.
I need someone to tell me if they think its really possible to take those 5 classes at one time. And of course I have to have a B in Math and A&P to get accepted into LPN school... Any and all advice please?!!
Thanks
Terra

Hi Terra. Have you been taking classes recently, say like spring, summer and are you enrolled now. There are lots of people on this forum who I believe have taken a full load, and have managed. Me on the other hand I have two children and I am taking 3 classes which one in A&P and I am feeling a little overwhelmed. Are any of those classes online?? It seems like a lot but only you know your situation do you feel you can take 5 classes in 11 weeks. YOu don't want to over work yourself. Why can't you take any in spring/summer semester? Good luck to you and your decision. I know what you are going thru it is crazy how waiting to take one class can prolong your getting into NS like almost a year.

This is more of a personal question, I think. I don't know how well academically you succeed and how much is on your plate. If you are going to take 5 classes in a quarter (One of them being A&P) DO NOT work at all, esp. if yhou havea daughter. It's easy to say 11 weeks, but burn out can happen quickly. My school had anatomy and physiology separate. I had many sleepless nights from those classes and I was only taking 3-4 classes total then. It also depends on the degree of difficulty. I know some students transferred to my school and passed A&P with a breeze, and failed it here...twice...So, look into what other students say about their experiences. Also, if you have to get a B...that's really hard (again depending on the difficulty of your class) but many students I know that achieve all "A's" barely passed with "C's" for A&P. I tended to study for about 30-40 hours for my physiology tests (but we had to take grad. students physiology) It seems you may also be struggling somewhat with math since you mentioned you have to get a B in there. I would take one of those two hard classes with the rest, and save the other class for the other quarter. I suppose you could sign up for 5 classes and then evaluate the one you would like to drop if it came to that time. It all really depends how much time you have and can give and how quickly it takes you to absorb info. I would either take 4 classes (one of those being math). Or 3 classes (one of those being A&P) and take math another time. Good Luck :)
