Specialties Management

I have been a nurse manager for an inpatient unit for about 6 years. Last year I began taking care of my sick mother and hired one of my Nursing Assistants to help with my mom at home. Over the course of the year we have become good friends. We never kept our friendship a secret and I have been careful about not giving special treatment to her at work. We recently took a girls weekend trip away for her birthday. Again, this wasn't a secret, but not something I announced to the staff. While we were gone several staff got the rumor mill going and they called the hotel I was staying at to see if I was a guest there. I feel this is a huge invasion of my privacy. I don't think there is anything wrong with us being friends. She is now looking to transfer to another unit. I feel bad about this entire situation. I take my career extremely seriously and never intended to cross any boundary. Should I go to my boss with this, or human resources?

I also feel like this is a huge invasion of privacy. I am a Team Leader for a surgery department, and I spend time with some of the people outside of work. Like you, I don't keep it a secret, but it's not something that I announce either. People know. I have always made a huge effort to make sure I don't show favoritism & so far have had very little issue with it. If someone called the hotel I was staying at though.....that's just creepy
