Need advice on Nursing School pre reqs!

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I have completed nutrition with an A, psych with a B, Biology with an A, and chemistry with a C. I have a&p and micro left. (and possibly sociology) Will it be hard to apply with that one C in chemistry? I have learned WAY better study habits and plan on doing extremely well in the remaining classes.

Also! is bridging from lvn to RN worth it?

THANKS!!

Those look like pretty good grades. A & P is tough, I haven't had micro yet, it's part of our program and not a pre req so I guess I will see that coming up. Soc was interesting and easy. Our chemistry was developmental or "basic high school chemistry"

so all we needed was an "S" grade. You never know unless you try! Good luck!

I took micro this past semester and had to drop it, so I have a W.

But I felt that receiving a W was better than getting a C and not being able to retake it.

I stayed in Micro past the half way mark and wished I would've studied before taking the class. I wasnt able to get into a&p so i resolved to micro.. bad idea.

I plan on studying A&P months before starting this fall.

and thanks!

I dont think you will have a problem as long as you ace A&P and Micro. I wouldnt bridge LVN to RN unless you arent accepted into an ADN/BSN program right away. Depending on your area LVN to RN is only a good idea if the wait list/competition is high and you are unwilling to wait for a spot to come up.

Well it all depends, is Chemistry a pre-req or an extra-point class for the program you applied? For the program I'm in Chem was just another class to get points, but not required at all. And A&P and Micro are DEFINITELY your most difficult classes, and if you want good grades in both, taking them in separate semesters is probably the best idea.

As for the LVN (called LPN here in Florida) bridge, I wouldn't do it. It's just ANOTHER tuition to pay and the same things you'd learn in an ASN (also known as ADN) program, just at a slower pace. To be honest I would consider getting your CNA over anything else before you do an RN program. Getting that kind of experience is key for clinicals, and it's cheaper and easier than LVN. I actually got 5 extra points on my application for having my CNA.

Just work the hardest you've ever worked in those 2 classes and you should be okay. I actually got a C in A&P1 (had a newborn while I took this class and it was my first college science class) and I also got a D in A&P 2 (started working as a CNA during finals and completely messed up my studying and in turn my final grade) but I still ended up getting in the program's alternate list, and now I'll be starting in the Fall. Good luck with it all, though!

Yes, chemistry still counts at some state schools. CC's no.

I forgot to add that i work as a CNA now, and have been for a year.

It can get frustrating.. working and school but if it gets me the extra points I hope it will help.

There's still hope then.. ! Thank you

Okay well I can't personally tell you if Chem is harder than A&P, but for me the most difficult was A&P like I said. And I know how that is, like I previously said starting work as a CNA definitely messed my semester up. And you're welcome, if I can give advice I always do because I need advice myself! Good luck again.

It depends on whether your school is a waiting list or a point-based admission system. In a point based system every point matters, so I can not say if it would hurt you or not. I will tell you that my school had 200 applicants for 32 spots. Of the 32 who got in the average GPA was 3.85, so if you keep your grades up and get a good entrance exam score you might be okay.
