Hello all, I am planning on applying to a CRNA program with hopes to start in 2009. I have a question and need some advice. I now currently work in an ICU which is a pretty basic unit which does not have trauma. It may have an occasional cardiac patient & patients on vents. In essence, just a basic ICU. I have an opportunity to work in an SICU at another facility which I will get alot of experience that is needed for CRNA school. Here's the thing, I signed a contract for a year with the facility I am currently employed. But, I am not getting what I need and I am missing out on a lot. The facility where I have the opportunity to work in SICU is like the top trauma center and I know I will get tons of experience. My question is do I leave my current job which I signed the contract? Or venture out and take the SICU position? All advice is welcome. I will appreciate any comments.

Can you see if the hospital with the SICU will buy out the remaining portion of your contract? Lots of them will.
You are probably right to transfer, regardless, since you need the higher acuity experience to be a more competitive applicant.

Many programs require applications 6-12 months in advance of starting the program, so I suggest making this change quickly and gain the new experience at the SICU before you apply.
Good luck!
Thanks for the advice, I will check to see if they will buy out the remaining contract. I know that I will need the additional experience.

I am planning on making the transition. I was just unsure of breaking the contract. But I know that I will need additional experience. The programs that I am applying for the 2009 class has an application deadline of Sep 2008 & Nov 2008. I have previous ICU experience years ago, but technology has changed. Thanks for your comment.
