Need advice on what classes to take

Published

Hi all, I'm trying to decide which co-req classes to take. I'm hoping some who have taken these can let me know which ones are really hard for someone who doesn't always do well with science (mainly chemistry... ugh) and also which ones might be ok (if any) to take with any science classes.

For science, I have to pick 2 from this list ~

Advanced Human Physiology

General Microbiology

Microbiology 1

Introductory Chemistry 1

Chemistry 1

Physics 1

Then I need to pick one of the following (I'd like to knock this one out next semester if at all possible, but if not then I'd like to know which one wouldn't take too much time away from my nursing classes (provided I get accepted for the fall of 2013.) Currently next semester I'm taking A&P 2, Psyc 101 and College Algebra.

Lifespan Development

Abnormal Psychology

Drugs and Human Behavior

Educational Psychology

Intro. to Sociology

Multicultural Studies.

Thanks in advance for any info or help you can give me!

Nursing revolves around Physiology, Anatomy, a lil Microbiology, Psychology & Pharmocology. Sociology is also good to take because it gives you insight to society and culture as a whole, which will also be helpful in Nursing. I also struggle with sciences, so I know your pain there lol. My advice is to get books for the sciences a couple of months in ADVANCE of taking your classes, so you can start becoming familar with the terminology and basic principles, so you have a little bit of a headstart on the material. I just got E-Z Anatomy and Physiology and LOVE it! I just read a chapter here and there whenever I have spare minute. It breaks things down great. I'd suggest getting a similar book for Microbiology (Microbiology Demystified is great). I found the above books on Amazon.

Also, don't be afraid to ask for help and use any and all help/additional learning resources made accessible to you especially for your science classes. Your sciences grades are the most important that you do really well in them, so make sure if you are stuggling, you get help right away.

So these would be my suggestions for classes that will effectively support your career in Nursing:

Advanced Human Physiology

General Microbiology

Microbiology 1

Lifespan Development

Intro. to Sociology

Drugs and Human Behavior

Good luck to you!

Do you eventually have to take ALL of these classes? or only 2 from the first and 1 from the last? I am assuming that you have to take them all-

so from the first list if you have to take 2 together then I would say intro to chem and physics. you will need the intro to chem for chem 1 and phys.

from the second list really any of them are easily doable with sciences, or even over the summer.

if you only have to do 2 TOTAL from the first list and 1 TOTAL from the second, then I am perplexed. most places require a & P and often you need chem to get into them and they also require micro with lab. from the second list lifespan development and sociology would prob be most helpful, or multicultural studies.

good luck.

Thank you both for your advice! I really appreciate it! Until this year, I had been out of school for 15 years, so trying to decide what I should do hasn't been easy. I'm currently in A&P 1 carrying a 92%. So I'm praying I'll take to A&P 2 like I am now. My grade is what it is because of the little bit of chem we did have to do lol. I'm sure I could do it if need be, problem is, it bores the heck out of me. Ugh!

I am going to look for both of those books so thank you for suggesting them!

As for the list, I only have to pick 2 from the first list and 1 from the second list. This is what Ivy Tech in IN requires for ASN degree. I can obviously do more if I wish, but with 5 kids ages 5-14 I really don't have the time to do too much extra. Also, we do have to have A&P 1 and 2 done before we can start any of the other sciences we pick. So I will do one over the summer and not sure if I should do the other in the fall or if I should do it by itself in the summer of 2014.

Thank you all again, I really do appreciate all the advice I can get!
