Need some advice (career change)...

Published

Good afternoon, everyone!

I'm new to the boards and have been looking around and can say that I just LOVE it here! Definitely a lot of good information here, which leads to my question/situation:

I was in an IT career for almost 20 years (no degree) when I was laid off July 2011. For the last few years, I contemplated returning to school and pursue changing careers and entering the field of nursing, but didn't have the time to return to school. So I actually looked at this layoff as the window of opportunity to actually do that, and enrolled into one of the City Colleges here (Chicago) to complete my prerequisites to pursue a BSN.

I have been blessed to not have to work up to this point while attending school full time, but am looking ahead and believe that I should get ahead of the '8ball' and start working again as I have to continue to pay the rent. I am single and my child is grown and on her own, so I only support myself. I would like to seek employment in a hospital setting to get a head start on some experience, but I have no medical certifications and only IT experience.

Any suggestions on what kinds of jobs I should look for? Should I just go the Associate's route to get the RN license first, then go back for the BSN? Any help would be appreciated... :)
