How many much older (40+) students out there starting classes? (I'm 47)
I have found that during my prereqs so far, I have been the oldest student in my Chemistry classes; in the rest, there were two or three students either my age or older in the class. At the open house, I ran into a friend whose son (a junior in HS) was interested in the Nursing program there. She asked me what I was doing there, since I was not with my daughter (she is in the military). When I told her a snippet of my goal, her reply was "All the way down HERE?" and my reply was "Absolutely!"...the exchange went back and forth a couple of times where I repeated my response with more and more conviction until she got it. In other words, "No, I am NOT too old to do this!"

[color=#8b4513]i love this thread! [color=#8b4513]i turned 42 a few weeks ago, and will be done with my pre-reqs at the city community college toward a bsn next spring (i live in chicago). i am changing careers from it after 20 years. i plan to enter into a nursing program next fall (2013). i actually went to an open house presentation at isu a few weeks ago, and at first felt intimidated because i was the only "mature" student. however, after settling in after a few minutes, it felt good. so, isu will be on my application list of next fall/spring. good luck to all of you! :)

Need some advice (career change)...
Good afternoon, everyone! I'm new to the boards and have been looking around and can say that I just LOVE it here! Definitely a lot of good information here, which leads to my question/situation: I was in an IT career for almost 20 years (no degree) when I was laid off July 2011. For the last few years, I contemplated returning to school and pursue changing careers and entering the field of nursing, but didn't have the time to return to school. So I actually looked at this layoff as the window of opportunity to actually do that, and enrolled into one of the City Colleges here (Chicago) to complete my prerequisites to pursue a BSN. I have been blessed to not have to work up to this point while attending school full time, but am looking ahead and believe that I should get ahead of the '8ball' and start working again as I have to continue to pay the rent. I am single and my child is grown and on her own, so I only support myself. I would like to seek employment in a hospital setting to get a head start on some experience, but I have no medical certifications and only IT experience. Any suggestions on what kinds of jobs I should look for? Should I just go the Associate's route to get the RN license first, then go back for the BSN? Any help would be appreciated... :)
