Need advice about break

Hello,

Looking for some advice or anyone with experience about my situation. Please no, "well you should of" as I can't go into the past and change anything.

I completed 1.5 years of a great, but accelerated nursing program in August 2014. During nursing school I became pregnant with twins (probably due to not taking my pill same time every day). I had my babies in October 2014. My original thought was to only take 3 months off and look for work as I was worried about losing knowledge, skill, and employment opportunities. Twins ended up being so much harder than I anticipated. My husband works 13 hour shifts 5 days a week so childcare was solely up to me. He is also in the process of applying for a new job with the federal government and the process is taking forever. I told him I'd take a year off then I was going back to work regardless. A couple weeks ago the one year mark came and went. I was in the process of looking for a job when one of my babies suffered a stroke, seizure, and is now hospitaized. Docs are discussing us having to have inpatient physical therapy for a minimum of 6 months (probably more) in a major city 3 hours away (so will probably have to move there).

So now a year has passed between graduating nursing school and finding employment. I have no idea how much longer it will be before things get to a point where I can look for employment again. Has anyone taken time off between graduating school (I passed the NCLEX and have my license) and starting their fist job? How did employers handle that? I was thinking of trying to work part time (depending on my son's needs). I'm afraid if much more time passes then I won't find employment and /or training will be incredibly difficult (I'll be more like a student again than a nurse). I can always review knowledge but not skills, etc.

Any constructive advice is appreciated.

Long road mama, I used to work inpatient Peds rehab.

Focus on your babies like you are currently doing

Like you said you can always do a refresher course, and depending what your sons needs are, you may pick up and hone some great skills just by being his mom and taking care of him,

So much of Peds rehab is teaching parents how to do skills at home, depending on what your sons needs are.

I have also read on there threads by others who have gotten that 1st job years after getting liscensed.

I would hope any future employer would understand the lag from NCLEX to the first job, if you wanted to explain why.
