Hi. I'm a 35 y.o. RN student at the ACCELERATED 2nd Degree BSN program here at Norfolk State University. So far, I'm scheduled to graduate in July 2008. I was discussing with my professor my concerns about whether or not I'm learning enough in terms of my clinical skills, since the program I'm currently in is so fast.
She suggested that I might want to pursue an externship after I graduate in order to freshen up my skills. She said that she was also going to present this option to a lot of my classmates, and in her opinion, she doesn't think it would hurt. According to my teacher, one of her friends has an externship position open in home health, which actually would enable me to brush up my IV clinical skills, etc. She believes, as a former employer herself, this wouldn't hurt, and it would look good on my resume to do this for a couple of months or so prior to going onto the floor.
I wanted some opinions. Do you think this is a good idea? Unfortunately, the program is 13 months, not including time to complete pre-requisites, compressed from the normal 2+ years, and I didn't have the time to do an externship while I was in this 13 month program.
Thanks for any info you can provide.

I think if you paid money to a school to prepare you to be a nurse and graduated successfully from their program ... you should be prepared to function as an RN. If even the school faculty thinks their program is not providing you the education you paid for, that's pretty sad -- and that school should be ashamed of itself.
