Navy Nurse Candidate Program - Interview Tips

Hi, I've been lurking here for almost 10 months now and I have truly enjoyed your comments :D. I'm especially impressed by the camaraderie among the hopefuls and those who are in :yeah:. I look forward to joining you soon. I'm in the beginning stages of applying for the Navy NCP program and I have an upcoming interview soon. If you have any experience or tips for interviewing for this program, please let me know. What should I emphasize in the interview? I plan to make the military my career and will emphasize my desire to become Intensive Care Nurse and be assigned to the USNS Mercy or USNS Comfort. I was a former Navy brat so I have some understanding of the military.

I have BA already and have applied for an accelerated 12 BSN program.

How long is ODS and I must commend and thank you for your service and obligation to serve our country! Is the NCP difficult to get into?

Specializes in Labor and Delivery; Orthopedics.

ODS is 5 weeks.

My experience with the interview was similar to the others posted, why the Navy, family, etc. I was also asked how I intended to act given a few ethical scenarios and my reasons for doing so. This was with a nurse corps LCdr. I also later had a phone interview with a Navy physician that was shorter and not as in depth with the questioning.

I am in the final stages of my application process ((WHAT A LONG JOURNEY THIS HAS BEEN!! It's taken me 6 months to get my application all put together.)), I am getting interviewed by a LCDR this evening. Once my application is submitted and is reviewed at headquarters in TN and sent off to DC for final review by the Navy Nurse Corps, approximately how long does it take to hear anything about acceptance into the program? Thanks!

JNL926 - is your interview in person or via phone? I am hoping to have my interviews soon. I believe the answer to your question depends on when the next board meets and rumor is soon, but not sure exactly when.

It was on the phone. They meet once every two weeks and my recruiter said theyare still working on reservist entries and no NCP yet...hope he is right! Good luck to you as well. When do you graduate??

I hope your recruiter is correct. I just found out that I am missing some medical info so that will slow me down (again). I graduate in May 2013. How about you? Good luck!

I graduate december 2012. I had some major bumps in the road with medical at MEPS in august.. i wish you luck and hope you get in the program!

I'm hoping this is my last hurdle! Keep us posted on how it goes!

I have been selected for the Navy Nurse Candidate Program and will be swearing in within the next week or so. Then just gotta finish up school which I will graduate in December next year as well as commission sometime next fall! Then off to Officer Development School I go which will be most likely January or February 2013! So excited! :)

Congrats JNL926!

I am (still) working on my packet, but finally have an interview scheduled next week, so I think it is almost complete. How was your interview?

My interview went really smooth, mine was done over the phone.. She basically just asked me what motivated me to join, why the Navy over the other branches and asked a little about my background as well as shared some of her experience as a nurse in the Navy. Good luck with your interview, just be yourself and make sure to address them by ma'am or sir and you will be fine! Let me know if you have any questions regarding the process once you submit your application, I know the Commander down at headquarters who signs the letters of selection so I asked alot of questions when my application was processed.

What kind of GPA are they looking for in the NCP? I have only about a 3.16 (nursing program dropped me a bit because of the way it's designed, it was 12 credits for the semester but graded as one class not broken down into individual topics, etc). I am concerned it may hurt me. I have my ASN and starting my BSN next week with an accelerated program going to graduate May/June (go at your own pace program) going to apply for the one year NCP scholarship. I have military all through my family, dad was Marines, step-dad Air Force, brother is currently CWO2. This is my dream, I want to be a Navy Nurse!! I am really hoping my GPA won't hold me back.
