National University Accelerated Post Bachelor + Paying Bills

Published

Hi All,

I'm applying for the nursing program April 2014 Cohort at National University in Rancho Bernardo CA. I am thinking i look pretty great on paper, so i'm not at the point where i feel nervous for acceptance. BUT What i am curious is how people in this program or other accelerated programs have managed financially when they transition back into school full time after working full time.

Here are my concerns;

I am responsible for insurance and my car payment and i am on my own for finding funding for school. I was lucky enough to have my first bachelors paid for by my parents so i am just experiencing the amazing world of financial aid! YAY

I am not worried about the load of work the actual program will be but how i will manage my finances when i am not working full time. I have heard that many people who tried to work while in this specific program have suffered because it requires so much of your time. I mean its a year and a half! cant beat that !:geek:

I am trying to save as much as possible but i know what i will have wont cover me for a year and a half. I guess all im asking for is some encouragement. Id like to hear how some of you managed!

Any advice?

Have you filled out the FAFSA yet for student aid? Since your Bachelor's degree was paid for, you should qualify for sub/unsub federal loans at a max of $57500 for undergrad degrees. Also, the ABSN program at NU is 22 months long. Good luck! :)

Lisa,

Woops! have all my nursing programs mixed up! Thank you for the clarification!

I was just accepted to their Oct 2013 cohort and I'm currently in that exact situation!

I've been working full time for so long! I'm nervous to not have an income, but I suppose I will make up for that once I find a job after. My best solution, thus far, is to just bite the bullet and take out some loans to live....

I'm 34 with a 3 yo and moving back home to start nursing school Fall '14.

Yikes!

I'm hoping to work PRN every once in a while to pay for my car and insurance (I'm currently an OT).

Pretty much I'm planning on being poor and accepting the offered help of my parents.

BlueEyes,

Let me know how it goes. I'm getting ready to submit all of my information for the October Deadline. It would be nice to hear how you manage everything. Im sure we will all figure it out. I mean people do this everyday and most aren't nearly as dedicated as nursing students! oh Good luck :) please feel free to share all your experiences, thoughts, frustrations or anything else you feel!

Meljonumd,

Goodluck! I guess im planning on doing the thing. i mean under two years is nothing compared to the rest of our career as students right? More power to you for doing it all with the 3yo!:nurse:
