My Experience at West Coast University (so far)

Published

Hello fellow future nurses!

I just wanted to inform you of my experience at WCU in an attempt to extinguish any rumors you might have heard. Here we go.

Yes, it is expensive. Yes, it requires commitment. However, so far I've enjoyed my time here. I have met a handful of people who make me think to myself "they're going to be a nurse??" but it's those same people who will not even make it to core. The prerequisites before you get to the clinical rotations do a fine job of weeding out those who do not have what it takes to be a nurse.

I was able to transfer in quite a few units from a community college, so I was not in any type of debt before I attended this school. If you can do that, DO IT!!! I was able to transfer in the following classes (36 units):

Anatomy

Written Comm IPhysiology

Oral Communication

College Math

Intro to Psychology

Life Span Psych

Chemistry

Critical Reasoning

Statistics

Written Comm II

This cut the cost of my tuition by over $50k which made the program more affordable for my family (along with a loan). A few friends of mine did the same thing and were actually able to get a few scholarships, and are paying for the entire program out of pocket! It's possible, guys. I was accepted into a few other private schools for their nursing programs, but I actually chose WCU because it's accelerated and there's no wait list. I started in January 2015 and graduate in April 2017.

During my first term, I took microbiology and cultural pluralism. You have an exam every week which does cause a lot of stress, but it forces you to study and retain the information! I'm the type of person who needs that extra nudge sometimes (I work best under pressure).

During my second term, I took pathophysiology alone. Because I transferred in so many units, I only had three prerequisite classes to take before I could enter core. This was not time wasted, however! I had a job, and I began volunteering at a children's hospital and interning at another hospital to get more clinical experience.

I start core next term and I am so excited. I will continue to update you guys as time goes on! Please let me know if you have any questions.

I'm thinking of starting WCU in January 2016, were there any requirements for the classes you transferred over? I mean did you need a certain grade in order for the class to be accepted, also how did you find out what classes would transfer over? I'm thinking of taking a few more prerequisites, about 12 units, at my local CC.

Hi are you still in the program if so how is it going for you?
