According to tonight's T.V. news, this lady was essentially a vegetable following open heart surgery. This couple had been married over 50 years. Too sad....

Investigators say a 71-year-old Lawrenceville man visiting his wife at St. Joseph's Hospital shot and killed her early Monday morning, then turned the gun on himself.

Beverly Shields, 70, and Donald Shields died in the incident at the hospital on Peachtree Dunwoody Road, Fulton County police said.

Efforts were made to resuscitate both victims, hospital spokesman Joseph Robb said.

The shooting occurred in the patient's room and no one else was threatened, Robb said.

Operations and security were normal by mid-morning, Robb said.

The couple's relatives asked that no further information be released by the hospital, Robb said.

Police said Beverly Shields was in the intensive care unit.

Police spokesman Gary Syblis said she had been in the hospital for several weeks and that her recovery was not going well.

Only God knows that man's last thoughts and why he felt the need to take both their lives. May they rest in peace. It's not for me to judge them.

That's just awful. :crying2:

I wonder, is there no way to prevent visitors from bringing deadly weapons into the hospital? Not that I'm trying to blame the hospital...St. Joseph's is a wonderful place and I'm sure they did all they could in this situation...

What a terrible tragedy. My thoughts are with the victims, their families, and the staff. :o
