Moving to Tacoma

Published

My husband and I may be moving to the Tacoma area by next summer. We are wondering what hospitals are the best in the area. Also, what areas would you recommend to live in? We will probably rent and would like an area that is safe, with good views. We love to eat out at smaller restaraunts and like variety of foods( Seattle had alot of variety which we liked when we visited there last year), and love to walk as well. I have read alot about Tacoma's redevelopment of the downtown and it does seem to have some nicer areas than Seattle , at least on paper. I would appreciate any advice you can give.Thanks.

There are a ton of cities surrounding Tacoma that are more suburbs-like if that's your taste, like, University Place, Lakewood, Fife, etc.

Can't say too much on the hospitals since I mostly know about the Seattle ones.

Good luck!

st joseph and the franciscan hospitals are good. Tacoma general/multicare, also good.

Areas: Steer clear of east and south tacoma. Seattle has a lot of beautiful places that have a ton of culture, but are waaaaaaaay expensive. tacoma is a bit cheaper. I live in University place, (basically tacoma, right next to it) it is beautiful and has nice views. I also used to live in north tacoma, it has more history and I LOVE it there. I'd live in the proctor/stadium district if I had to move.

I am not a nurse yet but i used to live in University Place, I love it, personally it is the only good place in tacoma because most other areas of Tacoma are dangerous and run down but UP is a sweet suburban area with lots of little eateries. Hope this helps. The ren in Up a year ago was about 950 average for a two bed two bath but Im sure it has gone up since then.

The North End and West End (Narrows Bridge neighborhood) are the best areas to live in Tacoma. University Place is nice as well. All three of these places are very "walker-friendly."

As far as hospitals, I personally think MultiCare Health System (Tacoma General, Mary Bridge, and Allenmore hospitals) is the best. Franciscan Health System (St. Joe's ) is also good.
