  1. yes the military does hire civilians. You can go to the on the internet and post a resume, search for jobs and submit your resume for positions. You are federal employees of the DOD. It is awesome. Just type in CHRA, this is the civilian human resources website. hope this helps.
  2. I am not positive this is a possibility however my brother who has been a DOD/DOA employee overseas for 15years stated that it is a possibility. We are going to try to make this happen. Besides MAMC seems to always have openings and since we already work there and are familiar with it we should be able to get back here without too much trouble. At least that is our hope. No matter what we are not going to pass up an opportunity to live and work in Germany if we are blessed enough to be offered jobs.
  3. My husband and I are both civilian DOD/DOA nurses at MRMC. We love it here. We are going to Germany at the beginning of December and have interviews set up with the Landstuhl recruiter for civilian RN's. We are hoping to be offered contracts for at least 2-3 years and since they will be getting 2 for the price of 1 its a goog possibility. We are really excited about the opportunity. We are going to have it written in our contract that we are guaranteed return positions at MRMC. I just am so excited I can hardly believe it. Nothing is for sure yet and Im trying not to get my hopes up but this would be a dream come true. Can anyone tell me what the working conditions are like at Landstuhl? What is the technology/equipment like there? Is it up to date? thanks for any info you can offer.
  4. Hi, My husband and I are moving to the Tacoma area. Can anyone tell me what the average RN wage is for an RN with 1 yr of experience and one with 3 years? THis would really help us make a choice. Thanks
  5. THanks so much for your help with our choice. We are really looking forward to seeing the two areas but at this point Madigan seems to be way ahead in my opinion. Thanks again.
  6. I saw this quote regarding madigan army hospital. My husband and I have both been offered positions at madigan and I would really like to know your opinion on the facility. Could you tell me about the learning opportunities, working conditions, employee morale and what ever other pertinent item you can think of. Thanks so much for your help.
  7. Hi, My husband and I are moving to the Tacoma or Seattle area. We have a definite offer at Madigan Army hospital already and a second offer at Virginia Mason. Has anyone out there ever worked for either place, and if so what is your opinion of them. We are going to visit both places in february, however, I would like to have some others ideas on the two. Thanks for any help you can offer.
  8. My husband and I may be moving to the Tacoma area by next summer. We are wondering what hospitals are the best in the area. Also, what areas would you recommend to live in? We will probably rent and would like an area that is safe, with good views. We love to eat out at smaller restaraunts and like variety of foods( Seattle had alot of variety which we liked when we visited there last year), and love to walk as well. I have read alot about Tacoma's redevelopment of the downtown and it does seem to have some nicer areas than Seattle , at least on paper. I would appreciate any advice you can give.Thanks.
  9. I live in knoxville. The pay is crap, after two year I make $19 and hour. The shift diff here is $3for night/$3for weekend. The cost of living is not all that either. Housing is getting reasonably expensive esp if you want to own or live in a nice apartment. Gas is expensive, sales tax is 10% although we have no income tax. I think the main thing to look at is not necessarily how high the rate of pay is compared to other places like chicago, but what the area has to offer as a place to live. Seattle area is awesome, the scenery is gorgeous, the people are nice, and there is so much variety. If you want to live there then whether or not you make a few dollars more or less shouldnt be the defining reason not to go there. I personally cant wait to move there next year. WIll I be there forever, doubtful, I plan on seeing as much of the world as I can, and I will probably try travel nursing for awhile, but I do plan on going there to start, then maybe San francisco a few years later. Life is too short to stay in a crap hole area that you dont like just because you may make a few dollars more. Good luck.:wink2:
  10. Hi My hubby and I(both RN's) are thinking of moving in about a year and a half. We are looking at san fran and seattle. Can anyone tell me what the avg. rate for a staff nurse with 2-4years exp. is in san fran area? Also does anyone have any preferences for the hospitals. I like to be a part of a team and am not too concerned about what type of patients we take care of (poor or rich) it doesnt matter as long as the hospital is well managed and the staff is friendly and helpful. Thanks for any help you might be able to offer.
  11. My husband and I just visited seattle and three hospitals in the seattle area. The out of school rate was $24.50 per hour and going up in June 2008. My rate with two year experience would be tentatively $27.50 also being renegotiated in June when contracts change. When we move we will my husband will have 1 year experience and I will have 3 with one year as charge nurse. We will have no problem making a very good living there. Here in tennessee the new grad rate is $17/hr, and me with 2 yrs and charge rate is $20. I made more cleaning houses, but we need to stay here until he gets a year under his belt. ALso most hospitals will pay for you to come for an interview, as well as reimburse up to $2500 for moving costs. THey also give public transportation subsidies. I hope this has helped alittle. THanks
  12. Thanks for your reply. I have been trying for weeks on several sites to get someone to give me a little info and opinions and you are the first to respond. Thanks so much and good luck.
  13. my husband and I are moving to seattle in about a year. We have narrowed our hospital choices down to Harborview, Northwest, and Swedish. Does anyone have any opinions or experience with any of these facilities? We would really appreciate any elp that someone might be able to give to us. THanks:cheers:
  14. HI, My husband and I are moving to seattle in about a year. We have visited several hospitals in the area and have narrowed it down to Harborview, Swedish and Northwest in the northgate area. Does anyone have any opinions or experience with any of these hospitals? We are really looking forward to moving but want to make the right choices for us. THanks for any help anyone can give to us.
  15. I graduated in may of 2006, but I am still considered a new grad. I am 42 and this is a second career for me. I previously ran a cleaning business for 16 years and worked as a medical assistant for 7 years. During school I did meet nurses that treated students like we were the scum of the earth, however many of them were very nice. I started working at one hospital for 6 months but due to poor staffing(usually we had 7-8 pts) on a high acuity floor(oncology, hospice, orthopedic, ect) and the night shift was absolutely terrible to follow(never gave pain meds, never hung new IV bags, never did am CS ect)I just moved to a new hospital. I have found my fellow nurses to be very friendly, although sometimes whiny. I agree with that nursing is what you make of it. No job is ever going to be absolutely wonderful. There are always going to be moments and days that are worse than others, but for the most part, nursing gives me a sense of good will, I make decent money, and I have many opportunities to travel nurse. My husband is now attending nursing school and we plan on doing just that when he is done. I unfortunately met many nursing students in school who did not have very much common sense especially when it came to nursing. I hope that new grads will realize that nursing is a job as any other job, it is not easy and if we make mistakes its patients lives who we risk. It has its rewards but with rewards comes much responsibility.
