Moving to Seattle

Published

So I'm seriously considering a job offer at the Puget sound VA. I'm really hesitant because I would be moving across the country with my child alone. Can anyone recommend neighborhoods with good schools? I'd like to stay reasonably close to the Columbia ave location so I'm not spending so much time commuting. So something slightly urban but more family oriented?

I've lived in Seattle all my life and I think with your little one it's important to prioritize a safe area. I would recommend looking for cities just outside of seattle, like Wallingford, Ravenna, maple leaf, wedgewood, near greenlake, shoreline/Edmonds. The bus system is amazingly easy there, and commutes aren't too bad if you drive. Best of luck!

The poster above lists a number of neighborhoods in the North End of Seattle that are good. All of them are still in the Seattle School District. The VA hospital is in south Seattle, and many of the neighborhoods there are problematic. One thing to prepare yourself for is the cost of housing (buying or renting) is skyrocketing. Supply is down, demand is up, and all of the computer geeks that have moved here to work for Microsoft, Amazon or Google keep bidding the prices up.
