3 Month LVN, Up for ADON pos in SNF.

Nurses Career Support

Published

I hope this is the correct place, forgive me if not. I've been a long time lurker (5 years?) and have only posted maybe 1-2 things recently.

Quick bit of Background. I was a CNA for 7 years before becoming an LVN. In that time I was told by my CNA instructor in California that I should pursue further to become a nurse. (Before taking the class I had very little interest in nursing, but fell in LOVE with it immediately, even as a CNA.)

Fast forward a few years, living in Texas I took on the additional roles on top of still working my CNA 40 hrs/week. A role as Restorative Aide, the DON gave me the master keys to the nurses carts and her office, as many nurses continually locked/misplaced keys. (something that was fought against harshly, but again, I was still given the trust and control when all admin staff was out of the building) I was also the Nursing supply orderer (Yes, nursing. Cath kits, gauze, TAO, trach cannulas, etc as a CNA. This was not allowed but I was the only one doing it, so caught only little resistance.)

***Fast forward to now. My schools NCLEX rate was at a 61% FAILURE rate. I passed first try.

There are 2 ADON positions becoming available in the next 12 and 18 days. I am B-lining for one of those positions. I began my "recruitment" 4 days ago and have the backing of 2/3 of the current ADON'S, the DON, HR head, and 2 other non-clinical department heads, as well as the Psychiatry NP's backing.

So my question is, what should I be aware of? (I'm open to the pro's of the position, as it will help with development/awareness) But i would like to center on the FYI's/BTW's, and Oh, "this is especially something to be aware of" type advice.

I am fully aware that I am new nurse. I am aware of my faults and bring them up semi-often. I've never been shy to admit when I am wrong, nor if I do not know something.

Please feel free and open to ask, comment, inquire, etc...I do not mind long winded comments/advice/inquiries etc...I encourage it actually. I'm ok with short to the point statements, experiences as well. I reeally am looking "all hands on deck that know something, say something." :-)

It seems that more than enough people think you can do it, so good luck to you.
