all of the schools I interviewed with gave me an hourly breakdown. Most were about 50-60 hour per week estimates. They factored in study time, but not travel time and being stuck at clinical late which I imaging happens all of the time. You'd be crazy to work, I think. I don't see how I could.

The question becomes how long to most new CRNAs carry this debt. Do most just use most of their first year salary to pay it off? (I have also seen want ads where a group or hospital claims they will pay it off.)

BTW, is a loan for CRNA school comparable to that of medical school in terms of interest rates, etc?

Gotta tell you, my wife is in the KP course, and she has no time at all to work. Her nights are behind closed doors studying and condensing notes. I salute all of you in the CRNA courses, it is at a mind blowing pace, and you have to be committed to becoming one to enduring the hardships, ie family, money, time. I am a stay at home dad, and we are looking at a final debt around 100k, but the salary will compensate. And loan companies are quite understanding about the "no work while in the program" criteria.

which state are you having your training? im a nurse from the uk and in the process of migrating to the usa. my goal is to become a crna but would have to work in icu for a year i think from what i can gather. before taking on the crna course. if i decide to go to california will i have far greater debts than 100k. will it be better for me to go to florida instead where cost of living is cheaper

As far as cost goes, it will depend on the program itself. Some schools, i.e. private vs. state funded will be considerably more expensive than others. The norm IMHO is about 100k in debt. Most CRNA's that I know did not have a problem paying the debt off in a timely fashion.

Most schools, including mine, strongly discourage working during the duration of the program. I will know more in a few months, but I'm sure that you will not find time to do much more than study while in a program.

I think the other thing to consider here that has not been mentioned are personal tendencies and "money smarts". One person may be able to get by on a $50,000 loan because they cut back in every area, while another may take out $100,000+ because they refuse to cut back on "lifstyle". As well, some people die with their debt because the suddenly larger salary after school drives them to immediately become extravagant instead of doing as they said and "quickly paying off their loans". I firmly believe that most people who live beyond their means with a smaller income will only increase their lifestyle and continue to live beyond their means when they attain a larger income...and in the end have only accumulated more debt instead of more wealth.

My ten cents...take it for what its worth.

which moderate state has great demands for crna? also, my previous question was if i opted to study in southern california will i end up having more debts?

finally, i will have an immigrant visa when i move to the usa, will the let me have the student loan if i live and worked there for 18 months? will they loan me that $100,000 they were talking about?
