Help, myself and our unit educator are planning to conduct a mock trial in the spring for our ED staff. Only problem is we have never done this before. Has anyone planned for this before? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have been a Legal Nurse Consultant for 16 years and an ED director for 20. I would be glad to assist you in setting up a trial for you.
Thank you for the offer. We have a case study already. We believe our nurses charting is subpar and wouldn't cya in court. So this is the plan. I have contact our prosecutor I work with for SANE & DV cases and hopefully she will be participating. Any direction you can give would be greatly appreciated. Our ED employees around 150.

An actual "trial" might be a bit less effective and more trouble than just having an attorney come in and "cross examine" a bunch of different people on their charting. That's where the problem is going to be. You don't really need all the players you'd have in a trial. Just an attorney, some subpar charting, and some willing guinea pigs to try to defend their charting.

How many ER nurses have gone though a mock trial/have had a mock trial in their ER? Just curious if this is prevalent. We have some very good charters in our ER; some that are so-so. Do people that have gone through one find it beneficial?

We had our legal department help us in this. We set people in the "hot seat" with a past chart and they got grilled, first like it was a deposition and then like they were on the stand. I was just involved in a real case and I can tell you that mocking it up with someone from your department isn't the same as the real deal lawyers doing it. It is eye opening and will make them squirm...esp when they rephrase something 10 times in a different way. Believe me when I say, they will always look up protocols and chart better!
