Mobility Aids

Hi!

I wanted to ask other school nurses how they handle students who state they have broken/injured a leg/hip etc. I always request documentation of the break and the accommodations suggested by the Dr for the student with a time period and for how long they will be limited. I have had issues with students using crutches/wheelchairs before seeing a Dr and requesting elevator use etc. If they need these mobility aids, they need to get seen at an urgent care/ER. I don't want to limit students ability to move around and participate in class but often the students who are using mobility aids without Dr notes are using them incorrectly (crutches/walkers wrong height. Wheelchairs for what ended up being minor sprain etc).  Do your schools have protocol for these situations? How do you have this conversation with parents? Appreciate your feedback!
