mixed feelings about acceptance

I just received my acceptance letter as a pre RN student at UNLV. Unfortunately, I may not be able to go. I live in WA, and am a single mom. It would be financially immpossible for me to make it on my own in Las Vegas (my parents watch my daughter so I can work, here).

I applied a few months ago, and had forgotten about it, as I made plans for attending school in state. I'll be trying to get into one of four programs here, that are extremely competitive. What bums me out about not being able to go to UNLV, is that if you're admitted as Pre-RN, you get into the nursing program as soon as your done with your pre-reqs (at least that's how I understood it to be). It's less competitive, which is great for me becuse I have issues with being a perfectionist, and overly competitive.

Anyway, thanks for listening. I just needed to vent a little. I'm sure if I don't end up getting into a program here, I'll really be kicking myself about not going to Nevada.

It'll all work out in the wash... I know that's not much comfort, but I can relate to the feeling. I got accepted into radiography school (applied last year), but was unable to go because I couldn't afford to quit my job.

It really stings when you want something so bad, and a seemingly good opportunity arises only for you to have to turn it down.

Vent all you want, I for one don't mind listening at all (goodness knows I do enough of my own totally unjustified venting anyway LOL)

I believe everything happens for a reason, though... so just keep chugging along, and good luck! :)

I will tell you what others have told me...many others from students to NP's...don't make UNLV your first choice in Vegas. If you want to save money and you want a BSN go to Nevada State College. The cost is $70 a unit...it's only 20 more than the ADN program. You can get into the program as soon as your done with the pre reqs but that's only if you pass all sciences with a B and above so if you slip in one class then they hold you back.

I would check out NSC...the school is only 1 year old but it's growing SOOOOO fast. I went down there the other day and loved the ppl, they were so helpful.

Good luck

Oh one more thing, if you still want to come to Vegas I would look into the ADN program...you can get 2 years paid for if you agree to work at 1 of 4 Valley hospital or Mountain View hospital (there may be other's but I don't know off hand) After your done these hospitals will also pay for you to complete your BSN. This is a good thing if your a single mom!
