Anyone here work in California Corrections and is in the reserves? I'd like to know how many days/year does CA Corrections allows mobilized reservists to double dip. Also, benefits like pension and 401k. Thanks.

Hi I am a Reservist and work for CA Dept of Corrections. As a state employee you get 30 military days per year (for when you are on orders), for drill you get the time off but need to use holiday credit, personal holidays, vacation, or you can take CTO(credit for time off) for any overtime you work instead of getting paid for it (I use a combo of CTO/holiday/personal holiday through the year) I work most holidays and get enough drizzle of overtime for CTO. Also if deployed for 6months or more the state will match your regular take home pay. You automatically start earning towards a pension, after 3 or 4 years as state employee you can make decision on investments in 401k or 457b through calpers.

Which branch are you with and how many years do you have in if you don't mind me asking?

Is it worth it to be in the reserves if you can work all the over time in the prison system? For example, the days you drill take away time you can be accruing the OT rate.

I don't work much OT, I get about 30min to 45 every day just waiting to be relieved and giving report. I am in AF reserve and have 13yrs in,it something that fulfills me and I believe in and being a state employee continues to make it make sense. I get tax benefit too due to long distance I go to drill but thats not due to being state employee. If you get on with state the OT is definitely there if you want it, so yes I could make more that way but that's not the only consideration.

What kind of shifts do you work? 8 hours? 12 hours?

What are the differentials for nights/weekends?

What times do they start?

What is the difference between the 401k and 457b ?
