MICU VS SICU

Published

I was offered a SICU position at a large teaching hospital. There's a seperate TICU, CVICU, and Neuro ICU, so none of those are included in the SICU. I am also interviewing at the MICU there and originally was sure that was where I wanted to work, but now that I might have options I'm not sure. I plan on getting my NP within the next 5 years and plan to work somewhere in internal so MICU would better prepare me. I really like the pathophysiology and acuity that somes with MICU. I'm coming from the ICU in a hospital that only has a CCU, ICU, and, CVICU so I think SICU could be a fun change, but am scared that some of my patients will be extubated and awake on the same shift. Cool thing is that they do liver and pancreas transplants in SICU. I want to work in the unit that has the highest acuity. I like patients who are circling the drain. Which do you think will have the highest acuity out of the MICU and a non trauma SICU?
