MICU vs SICU for critical care experience?

Published

Hi everyone!

I am currently searching/interviewing for ICU positions in hopes of someday applying to CRNA school. My question is... Do you think a SICU gives more/better experience than a MICU for CRNA school?

I've interviewed for a MICU position and have another MICU interview this week and also an M/SICU interview this week.

In my opinion and from my experience, the SICU is going to give you much better experience all around. Also, you will be in contact with CRNA's and anesthesiologists daily. In the MICU, you are going to be working with medical doctors and will become proficient with medical issues and not surgical issues. Being in the SICU will also help you to understand surgical procedures which is part of the battle when starting off in CRNA school.

Agreed. SICU is an amazing work environment where you see multi-modalities and lots...lots of different patient issues. You have many different types of groups following these patients. Not to say MICU is bad or you won't learn or gain valuable experience but it tends to harbor the more chronic of patients. ESRD, Infections, HTN, DM. A lot of turn/water/feed patients as they say.
